Picture of modern design with a picture of the start of the Madrid Gran Vía from Malaga painter, based in Madrid, Paula Varona
The Metropolis Building in the foreground, with the vertex of the two famous streets in Madrid, Gran Vía and Alcalá. This French style building (empire), originally designed by French architects Jules and Raymond Février for the insurance company La Unión and the Phoenix, in the end conducted Luis Esteve Fernández-Caballero, ending in 1910. sculpture that crowns the dome represents the Winged Victory, is the work of Federico Coullaut Valera. This sculpture replaced the original and the Phoenix Union crowning the building when it was the headquarters of the company. This, to sell the building and move to the new headquarters in the Paseo de la Castellana, was to crown the new building, the original sculpture, an allegorical bronze statue on which the Phoenix had a human figure with upraised arm representing Ganymede, by the sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux. In the background we can see the building of the former National Telephone Company of Spain, built in 1929 by architect Ignacio Cardenas Pastor, having the distinction of being the first skyscraper in Spain, and one of the first in Europe. It was also one of the first automatic telephone exchanges in Spain, it should serve 40000 subscribers. The picture is painted from the door of the Circulo de Bellas Artes.
